Iceland: scholarships and study funding

CliniGA Education editorial teamSources checked: October 27, 2026

Check eligibility before comparing scholarship amounts. An award may cover tuition, living costs or only a particular mobility period. Admission does not automatically include funding, and a national call may run on a different timetable from university financial support.

Iceland

The government scholarship administered by the Árni Magnússon Institute concerns Icelandic as a Second Language at the University of Iceland. It is a subject-specific award, not general funding for every Icelandic bachelor’s or master’s degree. Check whether your actual programme matches its scope. Keep tuition, rent and travel in separate budget lines. Count support as confirmed only after a written award decision, and maintain a workable financing plan if your application is unsuccessful.

Build your action plan

Check nationality, residence, degree and subject restrictions for each call.
Compare covered expenses, duration and conditions rather than the headline award alone.
Establish whether funding needs a separate application or nomination.
Do not budget an unconfirmed scholarship as income; reserve cash for travel, deposits and early months.
