Application conditions and current sources

Driving on a foreign licence and applying to convert it have different time limits in Italy. A valid Turkish licence requires an international driving permit or official Italian translation and may be used for up to one year after acquiring Italian residence. Conversion under the Turkish agreement requires residence for less than six years and a valid licence obtained before residence. The published agreement runs until 18 July 2028. The one-year driving limit is not a one-year conversion deadline and does not authorize driving while conversion remains incomplete.

Before paying a driving agency, record your Italian residence date, licence issue and expiry dates, and the categories you need. Ask the competent Ufficio Motorizzazione Civile to check the current Turkey agreement, category equivalence and your eligibility. A licence issued after Italian residence, or obtained by exchanging a licence that Italy cannot convert, may not qualify. Obtain the office’s current application checklist, medical fitness requirements, translation instructions, identification documents and payment details. Do not copy an old fee or assume the requirements for an EU licence apply to a Turkish licence. Keep copies of the submitted documents and written instructions. Arrange the process early enough to avoid an interruption of lawful driving after the first year. If that year has already ended, ask how to complete conversion without assuming that a pending application restores permission to drive. Confirm what happens to the Turkish licence when the Italian document is delivered. Also check separate rental-company and insurance conditions, which do not override public driving-licence law.
